Gerhard Richter is an exceptional personality - not because his pictures are world famous, but because he has demonstrated a new approach to painting. Né en 1932, Gerhard Richter est aujourd’hui considéré comme l’un des artistes les plus influents sur la scène internationale. Les quarante dernières années ont vu naître une œuvre qui doit sa position actuelle au dialogue qu’elle a su instaurer entre la peinture et le procédé mécanique de reproduction qu’est la photographie. Au-delà des contradictions apparentes, la diversité thématique et les ruptures de style qui parcourent l’œuvre de Richter reflètent les fluctuations du point de vue de l’artiste, qui cherche inlassablement à "se faire une idée de ce monde". Elles sont aussi l'expression, pour reprendre ses termes, du "vague et sans mesure", de " l'incertitude perpétuelle" qu’il revendique. A l'encontre des voies conceptuelles ou des tenants de la mort de l'art, son travail n’en apparaît pas moins comme un acte de foi dans les possibilités et la capacité illimitée de la peinture à invertir et à décomposer l'image. Si de nombreux critiques, confortés par l’acharnement de Gerhard Richter à nier toute implication personnelle dans son travail, ont qualifié sa peinture d’œuvre sans auteur, Dietmar Elger parvient, grâce à des interprétations inédites d’un grand nombre de tableaux mis en regard de la biographie de l’artiste, à modifier la vision que nous avons de son œuvre.
